Kathy Matkin-Clapton has always been guided by the belief that ‘music belongs to everyone‘. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the work she does with the U of L Conservatory Choirs. She believes that those who love to sing should be given a place to do so. That’s why all are welcome to join her choirs without an audition or previous musical experience. Under her direction, each singer is seen as valuable and is given the opportunity to grow as a musician through every rehearsal and performance.
In addition to her role as choral conductor, Kathy is a well known music educator, university instructor, clinician and arts enthusiast in our community. Her love for music and for working with young people are brought together in her role as choral director. She’s taught literally thousands of children, many of whom had their musical beginnings under her direction. While she’s is always proud of the recognition her choirs receive, her true goal is to create a community of singers who share a common love for song, laughter and making music together.
Nicole Garlock started conducting our Children’s Choir in the fall of 2014. She came to this role very naturally. Not only was she the accompanist for this group for several years, she has been a key part of the Conservatory Choir family for more than a decade. Nicole joined the U of L Youth Singers when she was just 12 years old, quickly becoming a clear leader in that group. In 2009, she was an inaugural member of our Incanto Singers, where she continues to shine as a fine example of choral singing, musicianship and leadership.
In addition to the excellent work she does leading the Children’s Choir, Nicole is also an elementary music specialist in School District #51.
A choir can only be as strong as its accompanist. In the case of all three of our choirs, we are very fortunate to be accompanied by two exceptional musicians.
Joel Goodfellow accompanies the Youth Singers and Incanto Singers. He is a performance major at the University of Lethbridge. Joel is highly sought after as an accompanist for ensembles and soloists throughout the province. He’s also an extremely accomplished musician and recording artist. Joel performs as a soloist throughout Alberta and British Columbia and is also a key member of the Joe Porter Trio.
Natasha Tompkins accompanies the Children’s Choir. She began taking piano lessons at the age of 5 and started teaching piano and theory lessons at the age of 15. Natasha completed a Bachelor of Arts with a Concentration in Music at Augustana University College and went on to earn a Bachelor of Elementary Education from the University of Alberta. In addition to her work as our accompanist, Natasha teaches both Kindermusik and private piano lessons for the Conservatory of Music,
